The film jokes around with fandoms and how offended fans of franchises can be when studios produce terrible films cashing in on popular intellectual properties. Scream 2022’s self-aware humor is not just a commentary on Hollywood, pointing out how these “requals” have formulaic elements, but also a critique of film audiences. There is an entire monologue where a character expounds on the rules of “Requals” as they refer to them in the film - making jokes about how there needs to be some originality but nothing too original to irritate fans, balancing new characters and “Legacy Characters.” The monologue is delivered while “Legacy Character” Dewey sits on the couch expressing his regret for getting involved with the new protagonist. Scream 2022, however, adds a new layer to this concept: namely, its self-awareness for the tropes present in “soft-reboots,” such as 2018’s Halloween its sequel Halloween Kills and Ghostbusters Afterlife. Characters who are fully aware of horror tropes is a staple of the series. Scream 2022 is an extremely clever parody of itself and all of the other recent “not-quite-reboots” we’ve seen in recent years.įor those familiar with Scream, the notion of characters trying to “follow the rules” of horror films is no new concept. I had never seen a Scream film upon walking into the recent soft-reboot of the series.Įquipped only with my general knowledge that the Scream films were partially meta-satires, I came to the theater expecting a run-of-the-mill slasher flick with a slight self-aware edge. The same can be said of Scream’s “Ghostface” mask. You needn’t have seen any of the Halloween, or Friday the 13th films to recognize their antagonists' distinctive masks. However, the monsters, murderers, and miscreants who star in them are ingrained in pop culture.

Stern have really captured the feel of the original Ghostbusters movie to a T! We reckon Stern has created another winner! Not to be outdone in the sensory game, the sound effects, Ernie Hudson’s speech guiding you through the game and Ray Parker Jr’s Ghostbusters soundtrack were literally music to our ears.
Based on the original Ghostbusters movie, the colours, set scenery and characters on the playfield were an instant trip down memory lane. Like with any new product, it was the visual and aural beauty of the machine that captured our immediate attention. So what did we think? Having played the pinball machine a few times, our first impressions were very positive indeed.

Once we wiped our drool and returned to Zax’s business showroom, it was time to put Ghostbusters Pro through its paces. We were lucky enough last year to experience Game Of Thrones before its official release, and it seems that we got lucky once again! This time, Zax Amusements were kind enough to open their doors and allow us to have a bump and tilt on Stern’s new pinball machine, Ghostbusters.īefore we could get to grips on the new Ghostbusters Pro pinball table, Zax’s Business Manager, Phil Boniwell gave us a grand tour of Zax Amusements – let’s just say that we were like kids in a candy store! There were 1980s and 1990s JAMMA boards carefully stacked on shelves, a myriad of gun peripherals, control panels, Neo Geo MVS carts and an amazing array of arcade machines from all eras! We honestly didn’t know where to look – it was a 360 degree visual onslaught of the amusement kind! You can take a peek at the photos further down below to see why we went all gaga. It is not every day we get an invitation to check out and play a newly released pinball game.
